Weekly Words - a quote, a tool, and a tip for writers

"Anything I've ever written was because I don't have a choice. I write stories because I can't wait to tell it, I can't wait to see how it ends." Khaled Hosseini

A Writing Tool

The Shape of a Story is a five-minute video by author Kurt Vonnegut. While incredibly humorous, it also shows how a story can be distilled into a simple line graph. There is power in stripping our stories to their core. When we truly understand them, then adding momentum, character arc, and meaning becomes easier because we have a better idea of what the reader expects from the story.

Author Platform Tip

A great way to build an author platform is to build an email list and send out newsletters. Some authors struggle with what to include in a newsletter. Here are some ideas that are related to either your book (whether it is published or not) and your writing life. If you've got photos, definitely include them. Write about:

  • An interesting tidbit of information you learned in your book research.

  • A location in your book and what it means to you. An example might be a restaurant you love. Share photos and your favorite dish.

  • Something about one of your characters that is not in the book but would be fun for a reader to learn.

  • Something about one of your characters that is in the book. If your main character is an artist, show examples of the type of art they love. If they drink an interesting cocktail, include the recipe.

  • Where you write. Readers love a peek into the writer's life.

  • Upcoming events you'll attend.

  • Your books (cover reveal, preorders, launch)

  • Books you love and books that inspire you as a writer.
