Weekly Words - a quote, a tool, and a tip for writers

"You should write because you love the shape of stories and sentences and the creation of different words on a page." Annie Proulx

A Publishing Tool

Jane Friedman has updated The Key Book Publishing Paths, her annual look at traditional publishing to self-publishing to social publishing. Regardless of your publishing goals, this tool is full of fantastic information.

Craft Tip

How do you know when your novel is ready to query or publish? It is a much longer road than most new writers realize. Here are some of the steps authors use to move from draft to polished. Between each step is the opportunity to revise.

  • Finish the novel.

  • Revise, taking notes on big issues (character arc, plot holes...), medium issues (point-of-view, pacing...), and small issues (grammar, cliches).

  • Work with a book coach or developmental editor.

  • Get input from critique partners.

  • Get input from beta readers.

  • Send to editor, copywriter, proofreader.
