Weekly Words - a quote, a tool, and a tip for writers

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

“The more transparent the writing, the more visible the poetry.” Gabriel Garcia Marquez

A Writing Tool

National Novel Writing Month starts November first. NaNoWriMo helps writers with goal setting (50,000 words in November - 1,667 words per day), has writer communities and write-ins, and offers an online tracking system. A new tool to help you build the foundation you need to write strong to the end is the Next Step Novel Prep online course. This self-directed course has exercises and questions to help you envision your book, build robust characters, and create a meaningful story. Feedback and coaching upgrades are available.

Craft Tip

One of the first questions you need to ask yourself when planning a novel or nonfiction book is: What are you trying to say about the world? Perhaps your novel is about how love conquers all, or how absolute power corrupts absolutely. Yes, these ideas have been written about thousands of times, but your unique experience will make your story different. The theme will drive your story from the first page to "The End."
