"First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won’t. Habit is persistence in practice.” Octavia Butler
A Writing Tool
Novels follow the grammatical and formatting guidelines of the Chicago Manual of Style. One of the best writing tools I've ever found is the abbreviated version by QuickStudy. It doesn't replace the original tome, but this portable, laminated trifold will answer most of your writing questions - and it's less than $10. By the way, this makes a great gift for your writer friends.
Tip to Avoid Writer's Block
Don't use forms of the verb "to be" when you can avoid it. Use verbs that depict action, description, or mood. This will make your writing more compelling.
