Weekly Words - a quote, a tool, and a tip for writers

"I thought that words and books and pens were more powerful than guns." Malala Yousafzai

A Writing Tool

National Novel Writing Month is almost here and keyboards across the world are heating up! Here is the most pedestrian and invaluable advice I will ever give: get a good backup system for your computer. Never risk losing your writing, whether it's the 1,667 words you wrote for NaNo, your last set of edits, or a poem that flitted into your head. There are so many great backup systems. My writing file automatically backs up to my Dropbox account. My computer automatically backs up online every evening through a company called iDrive. My husband uses an external backup drive that automatically backs up at a certain time every day. Protect your words!

Productivity Tip

Before you start a new novel - or revisions for those you NaNo rebels - spend some time thinking about what obstacles you'll have to overcome to meet your goals. How will you find the time to write? What will you do when writer's block strikes? Is there someone or something that will keep you accountable? Pick your top challenges and make a plan to overcome them.
