Next Step

Book Coach

Your dream of writing a book can come true. Whether you need help getting started, are stuck in the middle, or are ready to improve a rough draft,

it's time to take the Next Step.

Kathryn Dodson, PhD

I know how much a writing coach can help. After I finished my first novel, I knew it could be better, but didn't know how to get there. I enrolled in a series of courses, had the novel critiqued, did everything I could think of, and then I found a book coach. Unlike an edit, where you receive comments and maybe speak with the editor once on the phone one, a book coach works with you every week, teaching, encouraging, and holding you accountable.

I took my first book coaching course to become a better writer, and found that I loved helping others solve their books' problems and take the next step in their writing. I have earned an Author Accelerator Advanced Book Coach Certification by completing rigorous program that included story development, structure, revision, editing, and working with clients to edit and improve their novels. I also have a Writer's Digest Copyediting Certification. It is a joy to work with dedicated writers who have stories that need to be told.

My B.A. in English from Southern Methodist University includes a Creative Writing Specialization. I have also earned an MBA and a PhD. I worked as an executive for nonprofit, for profit and government agencies for before focusing on writing and coaching full-time.

I live in Carlsbad, California, with my husband and son where I pursue my writing and book coaching career.

"I really appreciate your feedback and encouragement;  it's going to help me make the final project something I'm really proud to share."

I just wanted to thank you again for all your work, time and feedback on my manuscript. Your notes, especially on the two-tier outline, helped me see what I was missing not just in that manuscript but in my WIP as well.

"After years of struggling along on my own and feeling paralyzed by fear, I finally found the writing coach I needed in Kathy. She found ways to help me feel confident about my writing after a long season of discouragement. Kathy was able to ask me the right questions and do the work to see the story I was trying to write. She helped me to make it pop in a way I wasn’t able to do on my own. The accountability of knowing I had someone to send pages to, helped me to do far more and far better than I would have accomplished on my own, and yet she was patient with me for every step of the journey.
I can truly say that her feedback and encouragement were pivotal to me this past year. I would highly encourage writers who need someone in their corner, to ask Kathy for help."
